Amish Recipes and Home Remedies
76
A few years ago I lived for a periood of time in upstate New York in an area where I had a lot of Amish neighbors. When I saw upstate New York I mean all the way up there on the St. Lawrence River where you could look across and see Prescott, Ontario. hile living there I used to buy all of my vegetables from their little stands by the side of the road. My husband had some lumber cut and a small storage built by the Amish. They do terrific work.
As they became used to seeing us around they began to wave as they passed our house in their horse and buggys. And when I stopped to pick out vegetables we began to talk about little things. As we became acquainted a woman would now and then mention a recipe and how they prepared their food. It went from that to talking about some of their home remedies. I thought it would be interesting to share a few of them with you. They swear by these remedies. And who are we to scoff, we have Old Wives Tales.
i was facinated by the difference in the way we treat our wounds and the way we take care of our health. I can't say if they work or not but there were always a lot of healthy looking children around on their farms. As for the recipes, I found them interesting. But, I never did try them. Again they have a lot of healthy happy looking children they must be doing something right.

I love home remedies, and I've been looking for that pickle recipe. Thanks!
I lived among the Amish in Holmes County, Ohio, for one year and really was intrigued by their lifestyle. I can still hear the clatter of hoof beats as their buggies passed us on the road. Lovely interesting Hub! Do you know the recipe for Amish Funeral Pie? I think it is made with raisins.
I have an Amish community nearby and they are the hardest working and resourceful people I've met. I like the pickle recipe..
It never ceases to amaze me that Big Pharma poo-poos home remedies when anyone who can read knows mankind survived for thousands of years by treating injuries and disease with ingredients available in kitchen gardens or nearby woods!
My only experience with the Amish was those who live near Elkhart IN, where one of my daughters lived. Driving through the countryside, theirs were always the largest and tidiest farms, even though they used only horses and horse-drawn implements to plow and harvest. The local Wal-Mart even had a shed for their horses and buggies and it was no big deal to have to slow down when finding one's self behind one on the highway.
The Amish aren't all sour and dour. I still laugh thinking about the two buggies parked next to the road in front of an Amish farm with a huge sign announcing "For Sale - Low Mileage"! (And I still kick myself for not stopping to snap a pic.)
It would also crack me up to see Amish women and their daughters in homemade dresses fastened with safety pins, but sporting brand-new Nikes (or one time, neon-green flip flops).
Awesome Hub KoffeeKlatch Gals and I am going to try the High Blood Pressure Remedy. So interesting seeing that I live only minutes from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania home of the Amish and I visit the Amish country frequently. I am also an avid cyclist and one of my favorite bike tours is the Covered Bridge Tour through the Amish country side. This bike tour is called a metric century (67 mlies) bicycle ride. Fantastic !
We live near Amish, too, and love it. They look like they have a quiet life, but it's often difficult work. Nice folks, though. Super people.
We don't have a large Amish population in my area but I know a little about their lifestyle from reading great articles like this one.
I think most of us could learn a bit from their examples of living a simple, low footprint lifestyle.
These are just great home remedies, the bee sting one I know works and the whopping cough one too. I am going to give a couple others a try too, thank you.
Thanks for sharing these recipes. The Amish lifestyle is one we could learn so much from! Thanks to their communities many tried and true remedies, recipes, and resourceful living techniques have been preserved rather than lost.
I did not know of these home remedies by the Amish. I lived in Pennsylvania my senior year of high school. The Amish were so fascinating to me. We were fortunate to live nearby where foods they prepared were sold. I will definitely give some of these a try. Thanks for sharing.

Love these home recipes - what I like most about them is that...they work! I'm glad to see vinegar often used. All the more reason to have some vinegar pie, yes?
I am living a more natural life every single day and it is so easy and I feel so happy and healthy as a result. I'll bookmark your hub so I can refer back and share it too.
Many thanks and rated way up and more! Yay!
